In 1998,  The University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa), The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville together formed the Gulf Central GigaPop Network. Each of these universities has been awarded a High- Performance Connection (HPC) grant by the National Science Foundation. The three founding members along with the partners share in the responsibilities and obligations of building a high performance network through contracts, memoranda of understandings, and consensus decisions making.

Some applications that leverage the GigaPop high bandwidth are being studied at these three universities, such as Remote Instrumentation at UA, Distributed Music Recording System at UAB, and Weather Analysis & Data Mining at UAH.
